ETA e-invoicing: a setup checklist

What a company needs before its first electronic invoice reaches the Egyptian Tax Authority, and what to watch afterwards.

Register and get your signature

E-invoicing is mandatory for companies that have been notified by the Tax Authority, in the phase that applies to them. Business-to-consumer sales use the separate e-receipt system.

  1. 01Register your company on the ETA e-invoicing portal and add the users who will manage it.
  2. 02Obtain an electronic signature (a token or an e-seal) from a licensed provider. Every invoice must be signed before it is submitted.
  3. 03Decide how you will submit: entering invoices on the portal, or integrating your accounting system with the ETA's API.

Code your items

Every product or service on an invoice needs an item code registered with the ETA — either a GS1 code or an internal EGS code that the Authority approves. Code your item list before going live; it is the step that takes longest.

Issue and submit

An e-invoice carries the seller's and buyer's tax registration numbers, the item codes and the tax types that apply. After submission the ETA validates it and returns a status and a unique identifier, which should be stored with the invoice in your system.

  1. 01Check customers' tax registration numbers before you invoice them.
  2. 02Submit invoices promptly after issuing them, within the window the ETA allows.
  3. 03Store the ETA identifier and status against each invoice.

After submission

Invoices can come back invalid, or be rejected by the buyer or cancelled by the seller within set time limits. Review statuses daily, fix the cause of invalid invoices — usually a wrong tax number or item code — and resubmit. Credit and debit notes follow the same route.
